The Second Secret is written as one continuous text with the First, FLOW pg 108, and with minor grammatical differences, pg 167. According to Lucy the Apparition made this statement:


"You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign God gives you that He is about to punish the world for its crimes by means of war, famine and persecutions against the Church and the Holy Father.

"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the first Saturdays of the month. If My requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the whole world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred. The Holy Father will have much to suffer. Various nations will be annihilated.

In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph.

The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.


2nd version, FLOW, Pg 167, added sentence Dec 1941:


In Portugal the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved; etc . . .


(Many have argued that the [etc . . .] is the Third Secret. I shall discuss later.)

The confusion in this Secret leaves one almost gasping. A gross mixture of images makes it almost nonsense. The salvation of souls from hell is confused with planetary chastisement; religious conversion of the nations is mixed with doom. We cannot expect that various nations will be annihilated except in an age-terminating event. Eduoard Dhanis had adequate grounds for questioning the validity of this "revelation."

The only possible explanation for this confusion is that Lucy set out on a campaign to rescue the world according to her hopes and desires. Her attempts over the years to penetrate the pieces of the revelations, the misunderstanding of exhortations given her and the other children to convert the world, the contradictions that such opposing requirements generated in her mind, and general failure to grasp end-of-age drama – all of these elements may have produced confusion. My analysis of the First Secret shows that she and the two other children just did not understand nuclear destructions and, among them, with the unintentional assistance of their village elders, devised the scenario of hell. Then Lucy places the opening remarks of this Second Secret into the mouth of the Apparition. We can easily understand that the sinners of the world will be lost in nuclear destructions, but they definitely would not be condemned to an imaginary hell.

We must understand that the many Marian revelations, intended to warn mankind of the coming Judgment, would not be in contradiction to one another. While we might expect differences in presentation, the design should not cause mankind to go off in distorted and confused directions.

The Fatima Secrets, as written by Lucy, were personal interpretations of revelation out of two private motives; first, an attempt to understand them from her limited conceptual range, and second, an attempt to direct the Church in the hope that she somehow could forestall the coming Judgment. As a consequence, she mixes warnings of the terminal judgment of the planetary age with a hope in salvage of the present civilization, and this is to be done through the only viable vehicle she knew -- the Church.

Remember, Jesus gave us a vivid scenario of the termination of the planetary age in Matt 24. This is even more graphically displayed in the Book of Revelation. The Fatima revelations would agree with those revelations except that Lucy mixed her personal hopes with God's Judgment. In the process she led millions of unsuspecting Catholics down a false road of secular salvation.

The two opposing views of a), a terminal judgment, and b), the salvage of the current civilization are not compatible. We can only assign this incompatibility to Lucy, and her simplistic hopes. Her "Secrets" then have appealed to untold millions of people because those people also hold the same emotional but foolish hope of preservation of the current civilization. Hundreds of books and web sites are devoted to this foolish hope.

The hope is more than foolish. It is a road of bitter disappointment and loss of dedication to the Will of God.

Even more unnerving is the fact that Mary takes over devotion from God to herself. Lucy invokes the image of an Immaculate Heart in order to effect this idolatrous transformation. Perhaps this transformation of devotion and heavenly power was initiated by her celestial contacts, knowing full well how she would run with it, to prevent her from becoming elevated beyond her service. The messenger is not important; the message is. But Lucy, with sincerity of heart, went on to implant her desires into her service. She should have left well-enough alone.

We can now better understand why the Church, and Eduoard Dhanis, had so many problems with Lucy. Her remarks do not make theological or rational sense. They do not have a solid logical foundation. Given how a widespread Fatima cult rapidly built up around Lucy, fueled by the Miracle of the Sun, and the influence she had on millions of people, the Church was caught in a double-headed dilemma: first, how to rectify the confusion created by Lucy, and second, how to deny apocalyptic doom. In practical terms, how does one describe the religious (not apocalyptic) authenticity of a confused "revelation" without destroying the integrity of the conveyor? We can understand why an apostate priesthood and Church hierarchy would do all it could to deny her, while pacifying the masses. The process ended in outright perfidy.

I shall separate the elements. We can then better apprehend how Lucy mixed her primitive and wishful thinking with divine revelation.

Possible simplified image conditioned by Lucy's lack of knowledge. She had no way to know the reality of a nuclear age where souls (people) will be lost in nuclear devastations. She interpreted according to her understanding.

Elsewhere Lucy admits that very few souls will be saved for eternity. She did not work out the contradiction.**

to My Immaculate Heart.


Strangely, Lucy does not say "devotion to God," or "devotion to Jesus," or "devotion to him." She invokes an image that demands devotion to the heart of Mary.



This is an example of Catholic idolatry. Devotion is transferred from our Creator to the human Mary. God would not demand devotion to the heart of a human mortal. Nor would a legitimate Apparition make such demand. When Lucy said, "God wishes to establish," did the Apparition apply the phrase, or did Lucy? Why would a celestial personality, in spiritual loyalty to our Creator, request such transformation? This is strictly Lucy's wishful thinking out of her Catholic traditions. The fault goes back to the superstitious and pagan transformation of the "mother of God" to equal status with the Creator. She then must become a pure Virgin, with ability to command her Son, the God and Creator of us all, including Mary. Importantly, Cardinal Ratzinger recognized that the image of the Immaculate Heart meant the Will of God. "God wishes to establish in the world devotion to his Will." If Lucy had recognized the Will of God, she would not have led untold millions into such idolatrous confusion.

** Later I shall illustrate the confusion that existed in Lucy's mind. I shall examine early statements made by her and Jacinta, while they were still innocent of influence by Church and World expectations. I shall also consider statements she made much later that were not encumbered by her desire to "preach." Here I continue with the Second Secret.


If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace.   Here Lucy mixes soul salvation with international political scene. While the conversion of all human minds to God would bring peace among mankind, revelation repeatedly states the futility of such purely human hope.


If the world would become dedicated to the Will of God, many human souls would be saved, indeed, and there would be peace around the planet. But such transformation among human kind is in the future ages, not in the current godless civilization. The world has a long road before it reaches such blissful condition.



The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI.



This statement has been a contentious point in interpretation. When Lucy first wrote a letter to the Pope describing the Secrets, Bishop da Silva censored this reference. Many feel Lucy did not get the dates for the start of WW II correct. (Pius XI died Feb 10, 1939.) Since this was written after the start of WWII we cannot know how her knowledge, ex post facto, influenced this statement.

The statement has the appearance of severely limited perspective. Lucy was attempting to place the immediate political environment into divine revelations. This is similar to what we found for Melanie in the La Salette material. The more closely we examine Lucy's remarks the more we see her simplistic hopes wrapped into divine revelation. She did not comprehend decades of time unfolding into a world judgment. Then the reference to Pius XI was strictly her human wish. The abrupt reference to a human leader, known when she did the writing, casts grave suspicions on the integrity of her report.

against the Church and the Holy Father.


Here Lucy again places her religious world into prominence that makes other world concerns secondary. This is a veneration that continues her idolatry. All of mankind will experience persecutions. When the world comes to the most intense suffering ever known does anyone think the Pope or the Church will still be held as objects of veneration? Jacinta had a vision of him being cursed and stoned. But Lucy did not make the connection.



"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for

the consecration of Russia . . .

What did the Apparition mean, "I shall come?" Why not, "I have come?" Was there to be another visitation that would make more explicit the consecration of Russia?



It was here that Lucy ran headlong against Church secular policies. The Canon Law of the Church requires that no individual, no social entity, no political body, may be consecrated unless they are previously converted to God and have devotion to the Church. This is why successive Popes have avoided overt direct consecration of Russia. Church leaders could not betray Vatican Law. Only after massive Fatima movements within the Church body, asking for this consecration, were consecrations performed. But they avoided the central issue, that of the consecration of Russia. This policy issue caused the Vatican to treat Lucy with cool distance and to create the necessary public appearance of not obeying her requests. The Vatican was thus eventually confronted with the opposing forces of Church policy and the wishes of the masses. Then, in an effort to quell this universal desire, the Vatican obtained a fraudulent letter from Lucy under pretense and in private audience that expressed her approval of the consecration of the world. (Note the consecration of the world, not of Russia. Consecration of the world leaves the act devoid of specific political identification.) As stated by Cardinal Ratzinger and Mgr Bertone in their presentation of the fraudulent Third Secret: Sister Lucia personally confirmed that this solemn and universal act of consecration corresponded to what Our Lady wished. Citing a fraudulent letter from Lucy: ("Sim, està feita, tal como Nossa Senhora a pediu, desde o dia 25 de Março de 1984": "Yes it has been done just as Our Lady asked, on 25 March 1984": Letter of 8 November 1989). Hence any further discussion or request is without basis. The Vatican now refuses further discussion of the matter. This request has a tortured history I shall not review here.


to My Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the first Saturdays of the month.


Once again Lucy repeats her wishful hopes through idolatry. The Communion of Reparation is a requirement invented by Lucy in her desire to transform the Church. This is not a requirement of divine revelation.


If My requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the whole world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred.

Lucy continues to express her hope for a transformation that will preserve the current civilization.


Another subverting concept was introduced here. The image understood by Lucy, and followed by the masses, is the conversion and consecration of a godless atheistic society. (Consecration of a godless society again would be contrary to Canon Law.) Conditioning that religious goal were the international relationships of the twentieth century that revolved around fear of Russia’s political ambitions. From 1917, the year of the revelation and the Bolshevik revolution, most Christian people were burdened by the warfare between atheism and Christian beliefs. The universal Christian fear was the spreading of the errors of atheism and socialist political philosophy. This religious warfare, tangled with international politics, modified the expectations of Catholics, including Lucy. The Fatima revelation was presented by Lucy through the colored glass of that religious and political environment.

While we recognize that the conversion of Russia to God would help reduce international tensions, and bring peace to those

 troubled waters, this short vision again failed to recognize the godless roots of a secular society. Godlessness does not merely reside in atheism. It also resides in Christian countries that have abandoned Godly devotion. The entire world is now godless, parading under the shell of formal religions. Hence we find Lucy and her mass of Catholic followers locked into the images of the early twentieth century. Her written constructions of the revelations were temporal, styled to meet that fear.

As Jesus said, "There will be wars and rumors of wars." This is due to the godless state of the world, not to the policies of a single country. But a far greater fear should be expected from Russia. She will bring the destruction of our civilization when she blasts Great Babylon from the face of the earth. The good will be martyred far beyond any traditional expectations.

Lucy simply did not have the mind to grasp such cosmic events.


The Holy Father will have much to suffer.


Why does Lucy single out the Pope? What about the rest of the world? Was this sentence inspired by the vision of Jacinta?


Various nations will be annihilated.

Clearly, this is an apocalyptic doom that causes godless Vatican minds to go into gyrations. I have discussed the nations that will be destroyed.


In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph.


In the end God's Will will triumph, but not according to fond desires to preserve the current godless social order.

The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.


This remark is strictly a daydream. The consecration of Russia will never take place. Any such action would be futile. A period of peace will be granted to the world only after the terminating Judgment of this godless earth age. Clearly Lucy is expressing her fond dreams.

So Many Lost

The children knew that most of mankind would be eternally lost. This is shown in a series of remarks and statements from Jacinta and Lucy. Unfortunately, this is cast in the imagery of hell.


Sometimes, (Lucy recalls) Jacinta would call me or she would call her brother, (as if she were waking from sleep): "Francisco! Francisco! Are you praying with me? We must pray a lot to save souls from hell. So many go there! So many!"

Other times, after reflecting for a moment, she would say: "So many people fall into hell! So many are in hell!" To reassure her, I would say to her: "Don't worry, you're going to Heaven." "Yes, I'm going," she would say calmly, "but I wish everyone would go there also!" TWTAF, Vol II, pg 43.


Father Lombardi, founder of the "Movement for a Better World", visited her on October 13, 1953. He got around to questioning her on the subject of hell.

"Do you really believe that many people go to hell? I myself hope that God will save the greater number."

Lucy replied: "Many are those who are lost."

"Certainly the world is a cesspool of vices . . . But there is always hope of salvation."

"No, Father, many are lost." TWTAF, Vol II, pg 44.


Brother Michael writes:

More recently, in a letter to a young man tempted to leave his seminary, three times she recalled to him the grave danger of falling into hell. Here is how she ends her plea to the young man to remain faithful to his vocation:

"Do not be surprised that I speak to you so much about hell. This is one truth that it is necessary to recall often in these times, because we forget that souls are falling into hell in droves. Why? All the sacrifices that you make so as not to go there, and to prevent many others from going there — will you not find them well worth it." TWTAF, Vol II, pg 44.


One can see the futility Lucy recognized in general about making sacrifices or offering other ritual performances to avoid this fate.


Additional Notes
My Immaculate Heart:

This strong Catholic image is idolatrous in that it is assigned to Mary. If it were assigned to our Creator it would be an expression of his Will. Most of the world will not establish devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. Mary did not have an immaculate heart. No human mortal has an immaculate heart, whether they are the earth mother of a divine Son, or anyone else. God's people will establish devotion to God, liberated from the mythological framework of the Catholic Church.

The war is going to end:

This refers to World War I.

a worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI:

Ambrogio Damiano Achille Rattiborn was born on May 31, 1857 in Desio, Lombardy. He died Feb. 10, 1939 in Rome, Italy. He was Pope from 1922 until his death. While the world understands World War II as beginning in 1939, Lucy held to the position that the war started in 1938 when Germany occupied Austria. This view would confirm the prediction. This appears to be strictly a temporal insertion into the Marian revelation.

war, famine and persecutions against the Church and the Holy Father:

Many people look upon animosity by government agencies, churches in contest with one another, terrorist activities, or other assorted social actions, as persecutions. The words of the prophecy mean much more than such simple explanations. The persecutions will come from Devil agents, when they go out to destroy God's people. Many in the Catholic Church will be killed, including Bishops and Cardinals. These are the persecutions foretold by Jesus in the context of the end of the age. Refer to my previous Garabandal Paper on The Warning. The great spiritual contest within the Church will take place during this brief but intense period, with Bishop against Bishop, and Cardinal against Cardinal. (I do not ignore persecutions that will result from extreme social turmoil. Here I emphasize religious persecutions, not social persecutions.)

The persecutions might also mean those to come from nuclear holocaust. This last thought then leads into understanding of the following phrases.

the consecration of Russia:

Little does anyone realize the necessity for the consecration of Russia (not the Soviet Union) if nuclear disaster is to be avoided. This is not a forecast of Communist oppression of the decades of the past century, as interpreted by so many Catholics, but a prophecy of the role of Russia in bringing catastrophe to the world. This is seen in the further remarks.

she will spread her errors throughout the whole world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church:

The phrasing is such that it seems readily applicable to the world political scene of the early to mid-twentieth century. One can easily assume that the "errors" are those of communist philosophy. This has been the usual interpretation of Lucy's remarks. Her expectations of political change, learned from her social environment, probably influenced the nature of this remark. From the first part of the century, well into the 1980's this was true. Russia herself did not start wars, but communist philosophies of other countries did, such as in Korea and Viet Nam. Then Communism as a political philosophy suddenly and unexpectedly lost favor. The economic results of capitalism far outshone the hope of communism. The "errors" are now more easily understood as political control in a world run amuck. If the United States should imperialistically impose her will upon the world, and bring retribution to the nations of the mid-east, then Russia might respond in kind, fearful of further world destruction. This would cause world wide "persecution" of the Church and all people of the world in the form of nuclear catastrophe. We should weigh the revelation against the failure of the political concepts of the earlier 20th century, and the dramatic international alterations that have taken since 1980.

The good will be martyred:

The phrasing is too uncertain to pinpoint the actions to one episode, or religious or political mechanisms. Certainly, if a nuclear holocaust breaks loose, people over the entire earth will be "martyred." But the sense may be descriptive of God's people in the persecutions prior to world destructions, the period of The Warning I previously discussed.

The Holy Father will have much to suffer:

And so will the entire earth. The "Holy Father" will merely be one with the rest of human kind, and will carry no special social or religious rank in the world disaster. Singling out the Pope for special mention is strictly a Catholic emotional attachment to him. With the current apostate mind-set of the Vatican he would not deserve special attention by either celestial agencies or human beings.

Various nations will be annihilated:

After the statement of the Strange Light, this phrase is the most crucial of the entire message. The meaning is literal. Various nations will be annihilated, totally destroyed. This will include the modern state of Israel, various Muslim countries, and the United States. Refer to my work on World Destiny.

In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph:

I discussed previously how this can be understood as God's Will. God wishes to establish in the world devotion to His Will. In the end His Will will triumph. His Immaculate Heart denotes the purity of his Will, in conformance to the Will of God the Father.

The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world:

This phrase was not part of the original revelation. It is an addition expressing Lucy's personal desires. As Brother Michael of the Holy Trinity pointed out, The Whole Truth About Fatima, Vol 1, page 183, and footnote, page 211:

In the two Memoirs of Lucy, the texts of the great prophecy are identical, word for word. However, there is this difference: in the Fourth Memoir Sister Lucy added this phrase, which thus takes on capital importance. Logically it comes right before the conclusion: "In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph."

However, in my copy of her Memoirs this phrase is included in the Third as well as the Fourth. Perhaps Brother Michael was working from a French translation that differed.

Without question it takes on capital importance, but for reasons Brother Michael did not perceive. This spurious added phrase was merely a human afterthought and not a supreme revelation. How unfortunate that untold multitudes within the Church have hung their hats on this added phrase. It offers hope that the world will be converted, and that planetary disaster will be avoided. Lifetimes have been spent on this phrase and the false hope it offers. We can see how easily revelations can be altered to human desires by fallible children acting as seers.

One can see the effect this has had on Catholicism. Catholics raise mighty objections all over the world that the "Holy Father" never made a direct consecration of Russia. The Fatima Center web site at


and Father Nicholas Gruner spend major frustrated efforts, over decades of time, to alter Vatican policy to achieve this objective.

John Paul II came closer than any prior Pontiff, but even he deflected the literal fulfillment of the prophecy. Until recently the reasons were political; the Church had structural objections to consecrating a godless society. Many Catholics have noted this glaring fact; their discussions can be found in many books and web sites. With the arrangements for Russian representation at Vatican II the Church was committed to not singling out Russia for such consecration. In the unfolding destiny program Russia will not be consecrated. The period of peace must come after the Great World Judgment, and the entry of the world into a new planetary age.

How foolish! Judgment is judgment. Judgments will proceed. Only those ignorant of God's holy promises would expect to avert his divine executions.

Lucy also later added another phrase that reflected directly on Portugal:

"In Portugal the dogma of the faith will always be preserved."

As before, this is a purely human desire, dressed up as divine revelation. In the World Judgment, Portugal, as a nation, will pass into oblivion.

If the men and women who placed so much of their hopes on these human longings truly understood God and his righteous judgments they would not hang their eternal futures on such human fabrications.

How unfortunate!
