The Spirit of God |

In some of his letters Paul expressed a concept that has failed most Christians. The concept says that there lives within us a Spirit, and that that Spirit comes from the Father in Heaven. He called it the Spirit of God. This Spirit is to be distinguished from the Holy Spirit, and from the Spirit of Truth. These are all different spirit manifestations but Christians lump them together under the general rubric they call the Holy Spirit. I shall not engage in a dissertation on these different spirit manifestations. One may consult the Urantia Papers for such discussion. Here I shall provide a brief presentation on the concept of a Thought Adjuster, the Spirit fragment of the Father that resides within us. Refer to Papers 107 through 111. I shall concentrate on how this Spirit Fragment gives us assistance in the current world crisis.
First, I shall quote several passages from Paul.
Thus we see how Paul conceived of this Spirit Fragment. He believed we are controlled by this Spirit. The Urantia Papers speak of this Father Fragment as a Thought Controller, page 1177. However, Paul's concept was not directed toward a functional usefulness in our lives as we would understand it today in this great planetary crisis. He recognized it more in terms of its spiritual influence.
In many ways we do not even know our own minds, because so much of our inner mental processes are hidden from us.
Now consider how the Urantia Papers tell us about some of the functional aspects of the Spirit Fragment. (In order to understand the references one must be familiar with the Urantia Papers.)

Notice that this section of the Urantia text is directed toward specific human beings. Self-acting implies a Spirit that can act on its own initiative. A difference exists between a non-interfering Father Fragment and a self-acting Fragment. A non-interfering Father Fragment does not mean one that is passive, but rather one that continues to lead the human mortal even though it does not interfere in the spiritual decisions of that human being. A self-acting Father Fragment engages in more close interaction with the spiritual decisions of a human mortal. The human mortal has learned how to make decisions that are more in tune with destiny, the plans of God, both for himself and for the world. Not everyone has a self-acting Spirit Fragment. Paul spoke more about a self-acting adjuster.
A question naturally arises in study of this text. Do all the self-acting attributes apply to one individual? Or do they apply to different individuals? Is the text describing different attributes of the Thought Adjuster for one human being or for different human beings? For example, do Items #3 and #4 apply to the same person?
The listed attributes seem to apply to one individual. If that is true the inference is very strong. He would have an extraordinary Thought Adjuster. That individual would be a rather unique mortal, someone with few human compatriots.
But such a unique human being would not work in isolation. He has brothers and sisters to whom he provides his service. He leads them on to higher decisions.
An essential concept I have introduced concerning our service on the world today is that of faith-decision. We must have faith. And we must make decisions. If we sit around waiting for God to make our decisions we will be lost. But God is here to help us. He did not leave us isolated in this great crisis. His Spirit Fragment in each of us will assist us, will guide us to the right decisions. We will feel an inner impulse that will tell us the proper path, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
God would not ask for our help if he did not reciprocate by providing a means to help. But how would he do that if it is to be a work of faith, and not a work of miraculous demonstration? He does it by leading us through our Father Fragment. He speaks in the still small voice that shows us how to better serve him. He leads us on to decisions that will help salvage the world.
Many places we find remarks in the Bible or the Urantia Papers that have greater significance than simple theological debate often discloses. Only in the dynamics of reality exercise may we fully recognize that which may be asked of us. Repeatedly we are led to this question: "If revelation is provided within the Bible and The Urantia Papers that is relevant to the present crisis, why give it to us now and open our eyes to the meaning if it is not intended for our present use." Were our revelators merely offering entertainment, as the generations have so avidly pursued. Clearly revelation has an immediate application. Revelations are now being opened to us.
If we are contributors to a new planetary program, if we are to act at a time of great planetary emergency, if we are members of a group chosen by God, then we must assume that responsibility. A few of us may serve in critical roles of teaching to salvage the future of this planet. If so, it must mean that some of us have self-acting Adjusters. But in all of this, regardless of our role in the service of God, we share together for the spiritual benefit of mankind. All of us become chosen for His salvation of this world. |

I shall now offer a few comments on each of the items in the list above for self-acting Father Fragments.
1. This Father Fragment has prior experience in dealing with the evolving life of a will creature. He has lived with someone else. Either that will creature received such a gift on the basis of a temporary loan during his lifetime, or that will creature failed to make the necessary decisions for eternal survival. The Spirit of God never loses that which he has gained. This experience permits him greater versatility in meeting the challenges of the new indwelling. Though Adjusters seem to have the ability to learn. They progress as they accumulate experience. However, we should understand that these Father Fragments are eternal; they do not grow in terms of time; they understand all time. However, they grow in the sense of the manner in which the human mortal grows. Deep theological implications lie in this concept of Thought Adjusters but I cannot entertain such here.
2. Seven psychic circles exist. A human mortal begins at birth in the seventh and progresses spiritually to the first. Some humans may never progress; they remain in the seventh circle. Others may progress spiritually to the point where they enter the first. A self-acting Adjuster is given to a person who has entered at least the third psychic circle. The human has spiritually matured to that point even though he may not have achieved the first circle. Although we may not recognize a balance of spiritual power in that individual, we should recognize that such power is not demonstrated with a pious life. The individual may be acutely attuned to the practical affairs of life on the world and behaves accordingly. He is not a monk in some monastery isolated from the real world.
(We should note that Thought Adjusters are given to human beings early in life, around age five, page 532. If this is true, a self-acting adjuster is given to someone whose future is already known at that age. Paul expressed this predestination well when he said, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. Eph 1:4. This idea reflects back on how the Father Fragment actually grows in experience when he is an eternal entity.)
3. The human being may be so serious about God that he has made the supreme decision to join with God in eternity. The human mortal has unreservedly made a solemn and sincere commitment to the will of God. Although he may not actually fuse with his Adjuster in this mortal life, his eventual fusion is already a matter of fact on the record books of the Universe. That supreme decision may come in the context of a great planetary crisis, to enhance his relationship with God.
4. A discussion of the Reserve Corps of Destiny requires a lengthy dissertation. This is not the place for such discussion. But this human mortal is a member of that Corps.
5. The self-acting Adjusters are not passive entities within human beings. Universe operations on a planet may require them to actively participate in the administration of world affairs, outside of the human being. This extra-human activity will take place while the person is asleep, not during a waking state. The Father Fragment is always present with that person when that person is awake. During human sleep the Father Fragment may be temporarily detached to perform some exploit of liaison, contact, re-registration, or other extra-human service associated with the spiritual administration of the world of assignment.
We know that the midwayers are used as contact guardians when the Father Fragment is temporarily on other assignment. |
The purpose of the guardianship is to prevent the mind of that human mortal from being invaded by Caligastia during this period of vulnerability.
6. We now come to a most important element concerning this human mortal. What is meant by a human being who was the material complement of a spirit personality intrusted with the enactment of some cosmic achievement essential to the spiritual economy of the planet?
The phrases denote a partnership between a specific human mortal and a specific Spirit Personality. "Material complement" denotes more than partnership. It suggests a role wherein the mortal operates with relative freedom to execute a destiny function on a planet, in accordance with the plans of God. He is acutely attuned to that purpose. But the human mortal can be entrusted with such a critical role only because he is so outstandingly at-oneness with the Spirit Personality entrusted with the enactment of that cosmic achievement. As much as the Spirit Personality is entrusted with that cosmic achievement so the human mortal is entrusted with that achievement. He has a keen, discerning, and dedicated insight into that program.
Furthermore, the achievement is cosmic. It carries potential ramifications that affect the unfolding plans of a space realm, even of a universe. As Paul said, Eph 1:9-10 — For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. This individual contributes to the program of uniting all things.
If the Spirit Personality is Jesus,
if he is the Creator, then it may not be appropriate to speak of that
Personality as being entrusted with the enactment of that cosmic achievement. He
originates the cosmic achievement.
This is far more that being entrusted with it, unless one might consider
that the Father in Heaven entrusted the Creator with that achievement.
I must repeat Paul's words as a personal testimony: For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose.
However, we should understand that the person with this self-acting adjuster is limited in his knowledge and understanding according to the confines of his world assignment. He is not privy to the vast body of knowledge available to universe authorities. He is a limited human being. He has a functional understanding only to the problems and assignment of that particular world. |

Service in Cosmic Assignment |

How a human mortal may reach such insight without direct communication is one of the wonders of creation. That insight can only be due to the work of the Thought Adjuster. He has led the human mortal along a path of understanding through a life-time of insights. When we put all of these concepts together we reach the conclusion that the human mortal becomes the material complement to his Creator, and that it is his Creator who has laid out a program for higher world spiritual achievement. Then the Father Fragment, in leading the human being, is perfectly coordinated with the Creator for the plans for this world. We may get some understanding how human beings may become part of this program. Such achievement is accomplished through the Reserve Corps of Destiny.
Secret rehearsal does not mean that the human subject is given secrets not revealed to his fellows. All revelation is open to all human mortals. But most human mortals do not share in the understanding this specific human being possesses. On the other hand he may have in his mind items of importance of which he is unaware. The secret rehearsal may mean that he has been prepared to conduct himself according to the demands of the world condition when he is released for service. Until his release these matters may not be recognized by him. An important part of this service is the commitment of the human mortal. His dedication is without reserve, wholehearted. His love for his Creator far outweighs all human concerns. Social recognition has no meaning to the fulfillment of his service; he simply does not care what other human beings may think, and he may serve with full recognition that, in the end, there will be no human or social rewards. Now we can appreciate why Thought Adjusters of extraordinary versatility are required on our planet. They must cope with extreme planetary difficulties and contend with this impending world emergency.
Revealed in this remark is a most important clue to the functioning of the human mortal. Such individuals have considerable creative imagination. When the Father Fragment works with that individual He conveys the spiritual import of those factors to that functioning mind. Thus it is that the human being can come into magnificent coordination with the Creator, in the prosecution of actions that have repercussion both for the present and for the future. The key of the contactual tones of the spirit level not only deal with the present; they also deal with the future. The mind comes to focus those forces and energies toward insight into, and enactment of, planetary destiny. That insight and that enactment not only comes through the works of the Father Fragment in that individual but is also guided by insight into external sources of information. That may be previous revelation, prior prophecy. The Thought Adjuster helps to bring understanding of that previous prophecy through focus of those contactual tones. The activities of God, toward destiny, are given in prophecy and are not limited by a Father Fragment working within a human being, but by a grand coordination of all of these elements. Thus God can speak to all of us. It should be understood that those of us who have a wholehearted and sincere dedication to God may sometimes receive conscious help, although we may not recognize the origin of that help. In our struggle, in the liberated but controlled channels of creative imagination, we may discover factors of great spiritual import. Or deep spiritual transformations may take place during sleep. We may discover that we feel a deep spiritual sensitivity that we did not earlier notice. In this manner the forces and energies of our minds may become more fully adjusted to God's intimate contact on spiritual levels. |
All of this activity is directed toward a future program of planetary salvation. The actions of living human beings who become dedicated to their Creator serve to fulfill the plans of the future. Unfortunately, we are burdened with a sorrowful inheritance from the past.
This element is one of the most important aspects of the coming decisions of mankind. By making those decisions that are dedicated to God, and to the future of this world, a selection process will operate to foster and conserve higher spiritual types. Individuals with less cosmic insight will not come to the point of decision; they may hesitate. Then they will not survive to help in world salvation. In practical terms this means that some will make decisions today toward their physical salvation. They will act to escape nuclear destructions. Then their seed will be salvaged for the future of mankind. A natural selection process is at work, because this will depend upon a dedication and devotion to God that is missing from much of mankind. Do you see how great God is? Do you see how mankind can contribute to his programs of destiny? I shall now quote a section from the Urantia Papers that I found especially touching.
This is a record of the communication between this Father Fragment and this human mortal. Probably the human mortal did not actually heard audible words, but felt these admonitions in his heart and responded to them. This passage is also an inspiration to those of us who may feel that we serve in dedication to God. For the Father Fragment we offer:
